Smart & Biggar earns top awards for litigation and trademarks at MIP’s 2017 North America Awards

Smart & Biggar announced today that the firm was recognized by Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) for excellence in litigation and trademarks at the 2017 MIP North America Awards. Smart & Biggar was also the only Canadian firm to be shortlisted for awards in every category.

The firm was named Canadian Trademark Contentious Firm of the Year for the fourth consecutive year, and was also awarded one of the highest honours of the night – Milestone Case of the Year for North America. 

Awarded for excellence in litigation, the Milestone Case of the Year was earned through the firm’s breakthrough work on Bell Canada et al v 1326030 Ontario Inc dba ITVBox.net et al (2016 FC 612) involving Copyright infringement from applications pre-loaded on set-top boxes that provide their users with unauthorized access to copyrighted television content. The decision was recently confirmed by the Federal Court of Appeal, and was reported on here. The Plaintiffs were successfully represented by François Guay and Guillaume Lavoie Ste-Marie of Smart & Biggar’s Montreal office.

MIP recognized the firm at their 2017 North America Awards ceremony, on March 23, 2017, in Washington DC.  The awards recognize excellence in the global IP industry and are based on extensive interviews with global in-house IP and business leaders. Data from these interviews was the culmination of MIP's research for its World IP Survey in the United States and Canada.
