Scott has over two decades of experience as a patent lawyer and agent, both in private practice and as in-house counsel. While currently focused on patent procurement, Scott's past experience in litigation, licensing, and funding enable him to combine detailed specialist knowledge of patents with a generalist's overview of IP management. He uses his wide-ranging experience to provide high-value patents that are relevant to his clients' business goals.
Partnering with clients to secure and build their climate and medical technology IP rights
Scott’s technical expertise spans multiple climate technologies, including water treatment, alternative chemistry, renewable energy, and carbon capture, as well as medical technologies such as medical devices, drug delivery systems, and tissue culture innovations. He provides guidance in IP portfolio development and management and negotiates and drafts technology transfer and related commercial agreements.
His contentious experience includes managing a multinational patent dispute for a Fortune 100 company, involving parallel actions in the United States, Korea, Germany, Hungary and Australia as well as arguing oppositions before the European Patent Office under pro hac vice admission.
Scott is widely recognized in leading industry rankings, including the IAM Patent 1000, Who’s Who Legal, Managing Intellectual Property’s Patent Stars, the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and Best Lawyers in CanadaTM. He is also a past recipient of the J. Edward Maybee Memorial Prize, awarded for achieving the highest overall mark on the Canadian Patent Agent Examination.
