Turning innovation into a global IP advantage

With over two decades of experience, James has helped innovative companies build and leverage commercially relevant IP portfolios. His work includes preparing and prosecuting Canadian and U.S. patent applications and industrial design filings and coordinating with foreign counsel to secure counterpart rights worldwide.

Market‑ready IP: enforce, negotiate, advance

James streamlines new product launches by guiding his clients in design modifications where appropriate and clearing a path forward by challenging competitor IP through protests, oppositions, and, in collaboration with U.S. counsel, Patent Trial and Appeal Board proceedings, including inter partes reviews.

He represents his clients in negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements with customers, suppliers, competitors and collaborators, including licenses, supply agreements and NDAs.

Where appropriate, James advises his clients to enforce IP rights once granted for strategic advantage, issuing demand letters, leading settlement negotiations and supporting litigation counsel when court action is required.

James understands his client’s objectives and ensures all IP projects are aligned with the budgetary and timing constraints of the client.

James is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, and frequently speaks on IP topics.

He has been recognized for his work in the Best Lawyers in Canada™, IAM Patent 1000 and the Canadian Legal LEXPERT® Directory.
