Smart & Biggar announces new Partner and Counsel promotions for 2019

The partners of Smart & Biggar/Fetherstonhaugh are pleased to announce that Jeff Leuschner, a patent agent in the firm’s Ottawa office, has joined the partnership.

Jeff works primarily on patent drafting and prosecution in the fields of electrical and computer engineering. He provides insightful advice and counsel to clients on how to leverage patents to support their business objectives.

We are also pleased to share that Daniel Anthony and Sally Hemming have been promoted to Counsel.

Daniel is based in Ottawa and has more than 10 years’ experience as a litigator, including cases involving trademarks, copyright and domain names. He has appeared as counsel before the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and Ontario Superior Court. He specializes in all aspects of trademark and copyright law, including registration, strategic management, ownership, licensing and enforcement. He is also one of Canada’s leading experts in intellectual property issues relating to the internet, social media and domain names, advising clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies.

Sally, who works out of Toronto and Ottawa, has been practicing patent law for more than 15 years, with a focus on securing patent protection in the fields of biotechnology, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. She has in-depth experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in Canada, the United States and internationally. Sally also oversees patent prosecution in various other jurisdictions, including Europe, China, Japan and Australia, and in addition provides technical assistance in pharmaceutical litigation matters.
