Gurnoor Kaur Brar is an articling student in Smart & Biggar’s Ottawa office. She earned her Juris Doctor with a Concentration in Intellectual Property, Information and Technology at Western University and holds a Master of Science in Molecular Biology.
Gurnoor has a strong record of academic excellence and leadership. During law school, she was named to the Dean’s List, received the Dr. Karen Townsend Memorial Scholarship as the course prize in IP Law, and won the 2025 AIPPI Canada Essay Competition. She also represented Western Law as an oralist in the Harold G. Fox IP Moot and served as Staff Editor of the Western Journal of Legal Studies.
As Student Director of the Western Intellectual Property and Legal Innovation Clinic, Gurnoor provided legal information to entrepreneurs on IP strategies. She also served as a Research Assistant to Professor Bassem Awad and interned with Western University’s Office of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, supporting commercialization initiatives for university researchers.
Before law school, Gurnoor developed expertise in biomedical research and proteomics, specializing in cellular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease. Her work is published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
She looks forward to contributing to Smart & Biggar’s cutting-edge IP work and continuing to develop her skills alongside leading IP practitioners.
