Gurnoor Kaur Brar is a summer student in Smart & Biggar’s Ottawa office. She is currently completing her J.D. at Western University.  

Gurnoor has a proven track record of academic excellence and leadership. During her legal studies, Gurnoor was awarded the MacKewn, Winder, Kirwin Entrance Scholarship in Law for outstanding academic performance and commitment to public service. She is also a Caseworker at the Western IP & Innovation Legal Clinic, providing pro bono legal information and early-stage commercialization services to academic clients, inventors, and entrepreneurs under the guidance of supervising lawyers.

While completing her graduate degree, Gurnoor worked as a Laboratory Instructor and received the Richard Jarrell Excellence in Teaching at the Graduate Level Award. Her scientific expertise lies in bioinformatic analysis, computational statistics, and biomedical bench-top techniques with animal and cell models. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. In 2022, Gurnoor was honoured with the prestigious Robert J. Tiffin Student Leadership Award.

As a scientist and a law student, Gurnoor understands how innovation transforms our lives and has a genuine appreciation for the inventors’ journey. She is excited to join Smart & Biggar as a summer student because of the unparalleled opportunities to collaborate with the best leaders at the forefront of pharmaceutical and biologic patent prosecution in Canada.

Prior to joining Smart & Biggar, Gurnoor was a risk management intern for a private equity firm in Toronto.
