Brayden Secord is an articling student in our Toronto office. He earned his Juris Doctor from Western University, graduating with distinction.

During his legal studies, Brayden completed Western’s Area of Concentration in Intellectual Property, Information and Technology (IPIT). Upon graduation, he received the Ailbe C. Flynn LLB ’97 Memorial Scholarship for achieving the highest standing in the IPIT concentration, and the Law Society of Ontario Prize for being among the top 15 students in the graduating class. He also received the Dean of Law Entrance Scholarship for academic excellence in his pre-law studies.

While completing law school, Brayden served as a case manager at the Western IP & Innovation Legal Clinic and as vice president of technology for Western’s Student Legal Society. He also worked at Western’s Technology Transfer Office, where he supported university researchers with IP strategy and commercialization initiatives. In 2024, he represented Western in the Harold G. Fox IP Moot.

Prior to pursuing his legal studies, Brayden earned a B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Queen’s University, graduating with First Class Honours and receiving the Principal’s Entrance Scholarship. Brayden gained valuable experience as an electrical engineering designer at a consulting firm of engineers and technical specialists in Toronto, designing electrical layouts for data centres, smart buildings and commercial properties. He also worked as an intern at a major natural gas, oil and power-generation company in Calgary, contributing to the electrical and controls engineering for several 30MW compressor station projects across Western Canada.

Brayden is excited to return to Smart & Biggar as an articling student. He looks forward to supporting innovators and working at the forefront of emerging technologies alongside leading IP practitioners.
