Brayden Secord

Brayden is an associate in Smart & Biggar’s Toronto office. With a background in electrical engineering, he brings technical insight, analytical thinking, and a client-centred approach to helping innovators protect their intangible assets and navigate the evolving patent landscape. 

Brayden’s practice focuses on patent drafting and prosecution, particularly for software, artificial intelligence, electrical, and computer technologies. He works with a wide range of clients, including start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises and multinational corporations operating in Canada, the United States and globally. 

When working with clients, he seeks to understand both the technology underlying an invention and the broader business objectives it supports. He helps clients address complex issues relating to patentability and subject-matter eligibility, developing practical protection strategies that support the growth of their patent portfolios and businesses. Brayden provides clear communication throughout the process, anticipating questions and assisting clients with clear options and next steps.  

Brayden earned his Juris Doctor from Western University, graduating with distinction. He received the Ailbe C. Flynn LLB ’97 Memorial Scholarship for achieving the highest standing in the intellectual property concentration and the Law Society of Ontario Prize for placing among the top 15 students in his graduating class. 

During law school, Brayden served as a case manager at the Western IP & Innovation Legal Clinic and interned with Western’s Office of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, where he supported university researchers with IP strategy and commercialization initiatives. He also represented Western Law in the 2024 Harold G. Fox Intellectual Property Moot.
