Won Ha is a summer student in Smart & Biggar’s Toronto office. She is currently completing her Juris Doctor at Western University.
Won’s interest in intellectual property developed during her graduate studies, where she observed a neighbouring principal investigator register and commercialize an invention as a patent. This experience sparked her passion for intellectual property, especially in the areas of patentability and authorship in the age of AI.
During her legal studies, Won has demonstrated strong academic excellence. She earned first place in the BLG Client Consultation Competition and participated in the national Client Consultation Competition. She was awarded top oralist at the NRF Venture Capital Case Competition and competed in the Harold G. Fox Moot.
With a scientific academic background, Won conducted extensive research on plant and animal models, focusing on ATM proteins and female infertility. Her research earned multiple merit-based scholarships and awards, showcasing her ability to navigate complex biological systems and advance research methodologies.
Won has worked with start-up companies in consulting and legal research roles, advising on ecosystem and IP commercialization. She also gained experience in AI implementation and data-driven product development, strengthening her understanding of the intersection of technology and law.
Won is excited to join Smart & Biggar and looks forward to collaborating with leaders in the field of intellectual property.
