Engineering insight and a detail-oriented approach to patent protection
Ashley is an associate in Smart & Biggar’s Toronto office. With a background in engineering, she brings a strong technical perspective and a detail-oriented approach to helping clients protect their innovations.
Ashley’s practice focuses on patent drafting and prosecution across the computer and mechanical fields. Her experience spans working with a wide range of technologies, including industrial processes, software, medical devices and robotic systems. Leveraging her engineering background, Ashley is skilled at defining complex inventions into clear, manageable concepts and identifying the distinguishing features that may support patent protection.
During law school, she completed an academic exchange in Hong Kong focused on international intellectual property law, worked with inventors and start-ups as a fellow and coordinator with Osgoode’s IP Innovation Clinic, and competed in the USPTO National Patent Application Drafting Competition, where she was a regional finalist. Additionally, prior to law school, Ashley gained experience in the engineering consulting, construction, and transportation industries.
