Smart & Biggar, Canada’s leading firm in intellectual property law, is pleased to share that three lawyers across our Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal offices have been listed as “Rising Stars” in the 2019 edition of MIP IP Stars - Rising Stars.
Ottawa counsel, Daniel Anthony and senior associates, Abigail Smith of Toronto, and Guillaume Lavoie Ste-Marie of Montreal are featured in the Rising Stars guide, which highlights the best-performing associates who have contributed to the success of the firms and clients. Results are based on peer review and the client feedback obtained during research for the most recent edition of IP STARS.
Daniel Anthony specializes in all aspects of trademark and copyright law. In his practice he regularly advises clients, ranging from SMEs to fortune 500 companies, in the areas of trademarks and copyright law. As one of Canada’s leading experts in intellectual property issues relating to the Internet, social media and domain names, he is sought out for his success in removing infringing content from the Internet quickly and efficiently, regardless of jurisdiction. Daniel has 15 years’ experience as a litigator and handles the clearance, prosecution and registration of hundreds of trademarks, and successfully represents clients in trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademarks Office.
Abigail Smith applies her legal expertise and background in biochemistry and chemistry to her litigation practice, to help life sciences clients protect and strengthen their IP assets. She regularly represents clients in patent infringement and validity actions, including under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) (PM(NOC)) Regulations, before both the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal of Canada. Most recently, she was a member of the Smart & Biggar team that successfully represented AstraZeneca in a section 8 action against Apotex: Apotex Inc. v AstraZeneca Canada Inc., 2018 FC 181.
Guillaume Lavoie Ste-Marie is a copyright, patent and trademark litigator who is trusted by his clients to put in place practical and result-driven litigation strategies in complex IP matters. Guillaume represents local, national and international clients in a diverse array of industries, including motion picture and other media, broadcasting, retail goods, personal care products, sports equipment, food and beverage and industrial products. Guillaume is frequently involved in the protection and enforcement of protected geographical indications (Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée) in Canada.
