Smart & Biggar Toronto deepens its technical expertise with the addition of patent agent, Colin Climie
Smart & Biggar is pleased to announce that patent agent, Colin Climie, has joined the firm as a senior associate in Toronto.
Experienced patent drafter and prosecutor with expertise in telecommunications
With a career in intellectual property spanning more than two decades, Colin advises clients on all aspects of patent-related work with a focus on telecommunications. His clients range from local start-ups to large scale multinational corporations. He also advises foreign associates on their Canadian patent prosecution needs.
Colin has deep expertise across a broad spectrum of telecommunications areas, including network routing protocols, unified communication, optical switching, wireless digital communication, data security, cryptography, authentication, user interfaces and computer software. His diverse product portfolio also encompasses areas like farm machinery, office furniture, automotive exhaust systems and grocery store display cases.
Colin draws on his patent drafting and engineering expertise to assist innovators in obtaining patent protection while keeping business objectives in mind. When consulting with clients he considers issues like market potential, detectability, work-arounds and enforceability.
Robust patent practice informed by engineering background
After earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering, Colin worked for the Institute for Space and Terrestrial Science. In this role, he operated a wind imaging interferometer (WINDII) as it orbited the Earth on the side of NASA’s Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite.
Colin got his start in intellectual property as a technical consultant, where he advised clients on protecting their innovations while learning the skills of patent application preparation and prosecution. In 2003 he earned his certification to practice before the Canadian and U.S. patent offices and transitioned to a career as a patent agent.
We are very pleased to welcome Colin to Smart & Biggar and wish him great success.
