Steven Garland named Firm Managing Partner

TORONTO — Smart & Biggar has selected Steve Garland, one of the firm’s senior partners, and one of Canada’s premier intellectual property litigators, to serve as its new Managing Partner and Chair of the Executive Committee.

Steve has been a member of the firm’s Executive Committee for two years, and is former Finance Partner of the firm and Managing Partner of the Ottawa office. Several recent decisions in which Steven has acted as successful counsel have become leading cases, including Dow Chemical Company et al v Nova Chemicals Corporation, 2017 FC 350. Steve and his team successfully represented Dow in a patent infringement matter that led to a final award which totaled over $645 million (including prejudgment interest). This is the largest reported award in a Canadian patent infringement case.
