Smart & Biggar welcomes three new associates in Ottawa and Toronto
Smart & Biggar is pleased to welcome three new associates to our Ottawa and Toronto offices. Pelle Berends, Pierre-Olivier Ferko and Emily Xiang rejoin the firm following their terms as articling students. They will work alongside Canada’s IP leaders to assist clients in protecting their innovations and solving their most pressing IP issues.
Pelle Berends – Associate, Trademarks, Ottawa
Pelle advises clients at every stage of the trademark lifecycle, from selection and clearance to prosecution and registration, as well as in litigation. He is involved in contentious proceedings before the Trademarks Opposition Board, defending clients’ trademark rights in trademark opposition proceedings and non-use cancellation proceedings. He is also involved in Internet domain name arbitration proceedings.
Pierre-Olivier Ferko – Associate, Patents: Life Sciences and Chem/Bio, Ottawa
Pierre-Olivier’s work focuses on chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, as well as mechanical and simple engineering inventions, in North America and Europe. His wide variety of interests and willingness to stay on top of current developments enable him to approach new problems with fresh ideas. Pierre-Olivier believes that clear and consistent communication is key to client relationships. He works hard to put himself in his clients’ positions to best understand and deliver the services they need.
Emily Xiang – Associate, Patents: Engineering, Information and Communications Technology (EICT), Toronto
Emily combines a strong foundation in scientific research with a deep understanding of intellectual property law. Her practice is directed towards the prosecution of Canadian and foreign patent and industrial design applications. Her expertise spans manufacturing and industrial goods, biotechnology, life sciences, chemistry, consumer goods, medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Her multidisciplinary approach allows her to provide detailed and adaptable legal services that are tailored to clients’ needs.
We wish them all the best in their careers at Smart & Biggar.
