Norman is a seasoned intellectual property lawyer and patent agent with over 30 years of experience across patents, trademarks, licensing and related areas of IP law. Passionate about helping clients succeed, Norm has secured hundreds of patents, trademarks and industrial design registrations on their behalf.
A dedicated and client-focused IP advisor
Through his long career Norm has been a trusted counsel and advisor to his clients who include individual inventors, and product development and research teams and in-house counsel at medium and large corporations. Norm also works with a wide network of foreign lawyers, and patent and trademark agents representing clients from outside of Canada.
Technical and legal expertise informed by industry experience
Before entering the field and practice of law, Norm worked as a Mechanical Engineer in the steel industry. He completed his legal studies at Dalhousie University, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1971. In 1990, Norm was admitted into the Bar of the Province of British Columbia, where his practice continues today. Norm is a registered Canadian patent and trademark agent and is qualified to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office for residents of Canada.
Prior to joining Smart & Biggar, Norm was managing and founding partner of Cameron IP, in Vancouver, BC.
