Helping clients leverage IP for growth in Canada and abroad

Julien helps clients navigate the complexities of innovation in today’s competitive environment, creating strategies to leverage the client’s intellectual property (IP) and achieve their business objectives.

His clients span from large multinational corporations dealing with IP issues across borders and business divisions, to Canadian companies expanding internationally and seeking protection for their IP assets in new jurisdictions. Julien also counsels smaller local companies and inventors who look to him to help chart a course for commercialization and growth using their IP assets.

Drawing on technical expertise from a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, Julien is comfortable advising clients across a broad range of industries, such as metallurgy, transportation, biotechnology, green technology, pharmaceuticals, energy, software, finance, and retail goods.

Julien leads with a focus on his clients’ business. He has honed his skills in creating and managing patent and industrial design portfolios across multiple jurisdictions, both in private practice and in-house, with a view to monetization and/or enforcement.

Over the years, Julien has developed skills well-beyond the confines of IP procurement. He regularly provides opinions on patent validity, freedom-to-operate and infringement issues. He counsels on matters related to financing initiatives, licensing strategies as well as enforcement opportunities. In this context he regularly collaborates with his colleagues on various litigation matters before the provincial and Federal Courts.

Julien has experience conducting IP audits. He has advised large multinationals on IP issues related to complex corporate restructuring operations and drafted and negotiated a variety of IP-related agreements for his clients, including licensing, collaboration & research, material transfer, non-disclosure, employment and franchising agreements.
