Chris Kozak is an articling student in our Toronto office. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto.
Prior to pursuing his legal studies, Chris earned a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta. There he helped research and design a cold box for transporting vaccines in rural Africa for the Clinton Health Access Initiative as part of his capstone project.
Chris recently had a paper accepted for publication in the Criminal Law Quarterly. Titled “AI and Intellectual Property in Criminal Process – An Analysis of Competing Rights,” the paper explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and intellectual property law in the context of criminal proceedings. It is scheduled for publication by the end of 2025.
During his last year of law school, Chris spent a semester on exchange in Lyon, France. Chris studied European Business Law and took classes in International Intellectual Property Law, Internet and Digital Copyright Law and International Competition Law.
Before joining Smart & Biggar, he gained valuable experience working as a project manager on natural gas pipeline projects. He also conducted research on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) related to oil and gas and worked as a student in the leak detection department within a large energy infrastructure company.
Chris has spent the previous two summers at Smart & Biggar as a summer student. He is excited to return to the firm as an articling student and continue contributing to its work.
