Smart & Biggar hosts a session for ACC Ontario to explore IP Basics & Beyond

On May 28th Smart & Biggar will partner with the Association for Corporate Counsel (ACC) to host a continuing education session that covers ‘IP Basics & Beyond’ over lunch at the Toronto Region Board of Trade.

From manufacturers of commercial goods to service providers in the consumer and B2B space, the case for In-House Counsel to be involved in driving a clear Intellectual Property (IP) strategy is stronger than ever.

In-House Counsel who understand how to leverage and protect a company's IP assets can bring strategic value to the business, help improve a company's market position and have a direct impact on corporate profitability.

Partner, Matthew Zischka, will be joined by Richard Brait, General Counsel for Siemens Canada Limited, to discuss with in-house counsel how to collaborate with their business stakeholders and global legal teams to identify Intellectual Property in their businesses.

Topics will include:

  • Tips for getting started to develop a strategic IP roadmap
  • How to identify and manage Intellectual Property within the business
  • Understanding the risks and pitfalls of not effectively protecting IP assets
  • Intersection and alignment of global and local IP interests and assets
  • IP Challenges: When to leverage outside counsel, and specialized IP services

The ACC Ontario Chapter serves the needs of over 800 in-house lawyers who represent more than 300 companies in Ontario through networking, knowledge sharing, and continuing legal education on behalf of the in-house profession.
