Smart & Biggar promotes five new principals to support Canada’s innovation economy
TORONTO, Canada – 2 July 2026 – Smart & Biggar has announced ten promotions for 2026, including the appointment of five new Principals, representing the largest cohort of Principal promotions across the IPH Group this year.
The promotions include Christie Bates (Principal, Trademarks), Tierney Deluzio (Principal, Trademarks), Brandon Heard (Principal, Litigation), Nora Labbancz (Principal, Trademarks) and Mike Sgro (Principal, Life Sciences).
Additional promotions include William Audet (Senior Associate, Trademarks), Robert Baker (Senior Associate, Patents), Audrey Berteau (Senior Associate, Litigation), Reagan Seidler (Senior Associate, Trademarks) and Brittany-Hellier Grant (Senior Trademark Agent, Trademarks).
The appointments reflect Smart & Biggar's continued investment in multidisciplinary intellectual property expertise as Canadian businesses increasingly rely on innovation, branding and technology to drive growth and compete globally.
The breadth of this year's promotions spans life sciences, trademarks, legal services and technology, highlighting the diverse capabilities required to support clients across Canada's rapidly evolving innovation landscape.

The appointments took effect from 1 July 2026.
The promotions form part of a broader promotion round across the IPH Group, which has recognized 33 senior professionals across Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Asia, including a record 15 new principals.
