Canada’s Intellectual Property Firm

Smart & Biggar/Fetherstonhaugh leads the rankings in World Trademark Review 1000

Smart & Biggar/Fetherstonhaugh has once again achieved “gold band” status, as a leading firm in Canadian trademarks, in the 2015 edition of World Trademark Review 1000 – The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals. The guide stated that Smart & Biggar/Fetherstonhaugh is “one of the majors” and an “august boutique with a great depth of expertise in both prosecution and litigation.” We are also the only firm in Canada to have lawyers selected to the gold band ("the crème de la crème") in each of the categories: enforcement and litigation, prosecution and strategy, and anti-counterfeiting.

In total, six of our professionals were recognized in the guide:

  • Christian Bolduc is recommended for prosecution and strategy and is acclaimed for being “client focused [and] just great. He is incredibly impressive and a marvellous problem solver. You know you can rely on him to provide excellent quality service. He is fantastic when it comes to strategy.”
  • Mark Evans is recommended for enforcement and litigation, prosecution and strategy, and anti-counterfeiting, and is the only Canadian in the gold or silver bands of all three categories. He is praised for his work in both contentious and non-contentious matters. “He wears two hats and wears them well. He is a formidable opponent with some great high-profile wins under his belt. Of course he can be aggressive when necessary, but he is a judicious litigator and a big-picture thinker.”
  • Steven Garland is recommended for enforcement and litigation and is praised for being a “courtroom ace [who] fights the corner of some of the world’s most recognisable brands.”
  • François Guay is recommended for enforcement and litigation and is reputed for being “deeply acquainted with all areas of IP and an extremely convincing litigator.”
  • Brian Isaac is recommended for enforcement and litigation, as well as, anti-counterfeiting. He is lauded for being “efficient and practical” and someone who is “not only an extraordinary thinker, but will get the job done for the client.”
  • Philip Lapin is recommended for prosecution and strategy and is revered for his “vast expertise in prosecution” and for being an “expert in oppositions.” “He absolutely knows his stuff and inspires the utmost confidence” and “has carved out a stellar reputation.”
