Canada’s Intellectual Property Firm

Smart & Biggar receives three short listed nominations for the Benchmark Canada Awards

Smart & Biggar is pleased to be shortlisted for Benchmark Canada’s IP Litigation Firm of the Year. The firm is honoured to have received this award since 2015.

We are also pleased to announce that partners Gunars Gaikis and Steven Garland have been shortlisted for Canada’s IP Litigation Lawyer of the Year award.

  • Gunars Gaikis has appeared as lead counsel in many precedent setting IP cases before the Ontario, Federal and Supreme courts, including the June 30, 2017 Supreme Court of Canada decision in AstraZeneca v Apotex, which struck down the “promise of the patent” utility doctrine.
  • Steven Garland is noted by clients and surveys as being “an exceptional litigator” and “among the best”. His victory for the Dow Chemical Company netted the largest reported award in a Canadian patent infringement case on infringing revenues of approximately $1B dollars.

Winners will be announced at the Benchmark Canada Award Gala being held on Thursday March 7th at The St. Regis Toronto.

Benchmark Canada is dedicated to covering litigation practitioners and firms across Canada. The results presented stem from the culmination of extensive peer reviews and interviews with Canadian litigators that take place over a four month research period. Over the course of the interviews, recent casework that has been handled by the firms is examined and sources are asked to offer their professional opinions on litigators practicing within their province or practice area(s) across the country.
