Bryce Dorin and Justin Smith qualify as Canadian patent agents

Smart & Biggar is pleased to congratulate Bryce Dorin and Justin Smith for passing the Canadian Patent Agents Qualification Examinations and qualifying to practice as patent agents in Canada. Bryce and Justin passed the exams on their first attempts, which is a rare accomplishment.

Based in our Ottawa office, Bryce and Justin are members of our award-winning patent practice and work alongside a team of experienced lawyers and patent agents who are consistently recognized as industry leaders and trusted business partners.

Bryce is a member our electrical and mechanical patent team, with expertise in all aspects of patent protection. He is a skilled practitioner with exceptional technical expertise which he applies in drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, the United States Patent and Trademark Office and in other jurisdictions. As an inventor of two patented inventions, Bryce understands the needs and perspective of his clients – who range from independent inventors to large, multinational corporations – in seeking patents for their valuable innovations.

Justin belongs to the firm’s life sciences practice team and, in addition to earning his credentials as a patent agent, is also a qualified lawyer in Ontario. In his practice, Justin focuses on patent prosecution and protection of a wide variety of cutting-edge technologies across the life sciences sector. Justin has an advanced degree in chemistry, and works with clients across the spectrum of chemical innovation, including (bio)pharmaceuticals. He has particular expertise in the complex regulatory landscape governing patented and innovative drugs, allowing him to provide strategic advice and guidance on lifecycle management.

The Patent Agent Examination is a certification exam designed to assess the candidate's knowledge of the Patent Act, the Patent Rules, patent application drafting, case law and Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) practices. The exam is required to practice independently as a patent agent.

Smart & Biggar is committed to supporting the professional development of our team member and offers associates and technical consultants with hands-on learning opportunities and an in-house training program to support the writing of these challenging exams.
