Robert Baker discusses patent protection strategies for innovations with WIPR
In a recent interview with World IP Review (WIPR), Associate Robert Baker emphasizes the critical role of strategic patent protection for companies with advanced technologies.
Robert highlights the potential challenges companies face, stating: “Even with a large IP portfolio, its commercial exploitation may be encumbered by its competitors’ related patents.” Additionally, securing patents in upstream or downstream technologies may provide companies with flexibility to expand and reduce licensing challenges.
He notes the option of initiating licensing negotiations with relevant IP owners at an early stage. In this way, research and development may be adjusted depending on the outcome of licensing negotiations. Additionally, it may be important to file patent applications with varying scopes in the same technology space. “Broad applications may be used to target future uses, while narrower patent applications may target existing applications,” Robert says.
