Smart & Biggar IP team of experts present at 2023 IPIC-McGill Summer Program in Intellectual Property

Smart & Biggar is proud to participate once again in this year’s Intellectual Property Summer Program, offered in partnership by McGill University and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), from July 10 – July 26, 2023.

Throughout the program, Smart & Biggar Principals from Montréal and Ottawa will share their knowledge and expertise in patents, trademarks and IP strategy. Speakers include Christian Bolduc, Christine Genge, Philip Lapin, Martin Tremblay and Sanro Zlobec.

The program is divided into three courses covering a wide range of topics to help practitioners in the legal, business and government sectors keep up to date on the latest in IP. Participants can sign up for individual modules, full courses, or enrol in the entire program.

Understanding Trademarks

July 10

Christian Bolduc, a Principal in our Montreal office, will present during Module 1 “Basics of Canadian trademark prosecution,” on July 10, in a session titled: “Trademark applications: Filing requirements and special types of applications,” which will provide an introduction to the trademark office, preparing applications, the procedure, forms and required information, priority dates to be aware of and registrability restrictions. Christian will also discuss special applications, certification marks, official marks and mode of packaging/3D marks followed by a “Trademark filing strategy” workshop.

July 12

Ottawa based Principal, Philip Lapin, will present during Module 2 “Fundamentals of trademark management and contentious proceedings,” on July 12. He will provide insight into “Opposition proceedings: Overview, context and strategy” detailing the procedure and steps of opposition, why you should consider opposing, the costs and strategy, evidence, written arguments and hearings as well as the options available for settlement. This discussion will be followed by a “Reporting examiner’s reports” workshop.

Understanding patents

July 17

Christine Genge, a Principal located in our Ottawa office, will present “Designs: An Overview” in Module 1 “Obtaining and enforcing a patent,” on July 17. Christine will discuss registrable designs, interface with patents and copyrights, originality and prosecution in Canada and internationally. This presentation will be followed by an “Invention mining and patent claims drafting” workshop.

July 20

Principal of the firm Sanro Zlobec will participate in a panel discussion in Module 2 “Considerations relating to funding and valuation.”

July 21

Martin Tremblay, a Principal from our Montréal office, will join panellists in Module 2 “Alternative patent leveraging,” on July 21.
