The Economic Action Plan 2014 Act, No. 1, which includes significant amendments to the Trademarks Act, received Royal Assent on June 19, 2014. Accordingly, the Bill is now law and the amendments to the Trademarks Act will come into force on a date to be set by order in counsel.
The trademark provisions of the Act were discussed in our March 31, 2014 IP Update and recomendations for immediate consideration in light of the amendments were discussed in our June 16, 2014 IP Update. As discussed in the June 16 update, it is expected most of the amendments will come into force in the fall of this year, but regulations implementing international filing of trademark applications under the Madrid Protocol are expected to be delayed until at least 2015.
