Tony Chen is a summer student at Smart & Biggar’s Toronto office.
Tony earned a Master of Legal Studies from UCLA School of Law, where his recent research examines AI and copyright, including his paper Language Models’ Verbatim Copying: Copyright Infringement Analysis through the Lens of The New York Times Co v Microsoft Corp., OpenAI, Inc et al., published in the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal.
His work was chosen as one of six finalists from 50 submissions to be presented at the 2025 Osgoode Hall Law Journal JD Research Symposium.
Tony is excited to join Smart & Biggar for the deep technical bench strength of its practitioners and collaborative culture. He is looking forward to being immersed in an environment where he can develop his skills as a patent practitioner while working closely with experienced mentors.
