Smart & Biggar welcomes three new Partners and a new Counsel for 2020

The partners of Smart & Biggar LLP and Smart & Biggar IP Agency Co. are pleased to welcome Graham Hood, Lei Liu and Patrick Roszell to the partnership of the two firms. We are also pleased to share that Lynn Ing has been promoted to Counsel.

Graham Hood is a highly experienced trademark lawyer and litigator, sought after by brand owners focused on building and protecting their brands and reputations. He regularly advises clients on effective strategies to manage and monetize trademark portfolios and has successfully enforced clients’ trademark rights in Canada’s Federal and provincial courts. As one of the firm’s leading experts in anti-counterfeiting, Graham is also highly experienced in protecting brand owners’ rights at the border and online, and preventing the importation, distribution and sale of counterfeit goods and pirated works.

Patrick Roszell is a lawyer and patent agent with close to a decade of experience counselling clients on the creation, protection and management of IP rights. Patrick focuses on patent prosecution and IP strategy, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, providing patentability, infringement and freedom to operate opinions, and advising on IP-related agreements. His broad expertise includes computer hardware and software, telecommunications, power generation, oil and gas, manufacturing and medical devices.

Lei Liu is an accomplished patent agent who harnesses his advanced degree (Ph.D.) and knowledge of biotechnology, biological science and chemistry to assist clients with protecting their valuable intellectual property. Lei drafts and prosecutes Canadian patent applications and designs and implements IP strategies that align with clients’ business interests, and also assists clients in IP transactions, providing counsel on IP due diligence, IP audits and IP–related agreements. He counts among his clients pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, green technology companies, research institutions, and universities.

Promoted to Counsel of Smart & Biggar LLP

Lynn Ing has more than a decade of experience in patent prosecution and litigation, bolstered by her strong scientific expertise and background in cancer research. Among her many accomplishments, Lynn held an integral role in the successful appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada in AstraZeneca v Apotex, 2017 SCC 36, leading to the abolishment of the “promise doctrine” of patent utility in Canada. Lynn advises clients on biotechnology, chemical and pharmaceutical patent applications including for biologics, and represents them in patent infringement, impeachment and damages actions and litigation under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations.
