Steve Garland presents on Canadian patent litigation issues to in-house counsel in Silicon Valley

Smart & Biggar is pleased to sponsor and participate in the 30th annual Silicon Valley Association for General Counsel (SVAGC) All Hands Meeting from October 15 – 16, 2018 in Santa Clara, CA.

Managing partner, Steven Garland will co-present a session on “Canadian patent litigation: practical guide for in-house counsel” alongside Cullen Pendleton, Lead Counsel - Intellectual Property, Commercial, and Antitrust Litigation of Dow Chemical Company. Their presentation will explore patent litigation north of the border and some of the major differences from patent litigation in the US, both from a substantive and experiential standpoint, including:

  • Canadian Court system per se
  • Pleadings, discovery, use of experts, infringement testing, and trial process
  • Canadian remedies for infringement
  • Canadian appellate process

Partners Elliott Simcoe and Jonas Gifford will also attend the conference to network and meet with in-house counsel.

The All Hands Meeting is an annual invitation-only event produced in cooperation by Ivy Associates and the SVAGC.  Tailored to the unique needs of in-house professionals at companies that rely heavily on intellectual property, the event provides advanced CLE topics to address the full spectrum of legal, regulatory and ethical issues faced by tech companies.
