Smart & Biggar dominates Lexpert’s US/Canada Cross-Border Litigation guide by honouring 5 of the firm’s partners

November 29, 2017

Smart & Biggar announced today that five of the firm's partners, Mark Evans, Gunars Gaikis, Steven Garland, François Guay and Sheldon Hamilton, were featured among Canada's Leading Litigation Lawyers in the Lexpert® Guide to the Leading US/Canada Cross-Border Litigation Lawyers in Canada. Smart & Biggar had more lawyers identified for IP Litigation than any other firm included in the rankings – a reflection of our strength and track record in this area.

The same five partners were also recognized in the Lexpert® Special Edition – Canada’s Leading Litigation Lawyers published in the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine. This special edition also features a collection of litigation cases that appeared through the year in Big Suits, including a summary of The Dow Chemical Company v Nova Chemical Corporation. This case resulted in the largest Canadian patent infringement award in history for the plaintiff, Dow Chemical, who were represented by Steven Garland, Jeremy Want, Colin Ingram, Daniel Davies and Kevin Graham of Smart & Biggar.

The Lexpert® Litigation guide rankings are based on Lexpert’s annual survey of leading lawyers across Canada, which identifies leading law firms and practitioners by surveying thousands of respected Canadian lawyers, corporate counsel and other professionals across 61 practice areas. The Lexpert® US/Canada Cross-Border Litigation Lawyers are selected on the basis of peer surveys, which cover all areas of business law in Canada, and whose practices include a significant cross-border component were chosen for inclusion in the guide. Inclusion in each directory is an acknowledgement of excellence by a practitioner’s own peers and colleagues.
