Philip Lapin joins INTA webcast on new non-traditional marks in Canada

Philip Lapin, a Partner in Smart & Biggar’s Ottawa office and member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) Non-Traditional Marks Committee, will join Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) Policy Analyst, Jason Roberts, in discussing the upcoming changes to Canadian trademark law and the impact on trademark registrations.

On June 17, 2019, Canadian trademark law will be overhauled. Among the significant changes will be that Canada will begin allowing trademark registrations to protect virtually anything that can function as a trademark, including smell, taste, and color per se.

In the webcast “The New Non-traditional Marks in Canada: What Are They and How Do You Protect Them?” Philip and Jason will explore which non-traditional marks can be protected and which cannot. They will also cover protection of these new types of marks, best practices for protection and the pitfalls to avoid.
