Smart & Biggar welcomes Tom Trinh to life sciences practice in Vancouver

We are proud to announce that Tom Trinh has joined Smart & Biggar’s life sciences practice as a senior associate in our Vancouver office.

Strategic IP expert in procurement, commercialization and enforcement for life sciences

Tom Trinh is a results driven lawyer whose practice covers all aspects of patent preparation, prosecution and counseling. Over the course of his fifteen-plus years as an in-house counsel in the pharmaceutical and consumer goods industries (including a major Fortune 500 company), Tom has led strategic IP procurement, commercialization and enforcement on behalf of his clients. His extensive experience allows his clients to trust his ability to anticipate their needs and provide timely, holistic and commercially relevant legal advice.

Global experience in IP strategy and across industries with an in-house perspective

Having held IP roles as in-house counsel in North America, Asia (specifically China and Japan) and Europe, Tom brings a global perspective to IP strategy and offers invaluable insight into the practical needs of corporate IP departments pursuing growth and business value.

Tom’s expertise includes world-wide patent application drafting and prosecution, holistic patent strategy counseling, negotiation and preparation of complex intellectual property and license agreements, and M&A due diligence. Furthermore, he has provided legal and strategic counseling to senior/executive management on all types of IP-related issues including global freedom-to-market for successful market launch, invalidity and freedom-to-operate and dispute resolution.

Tom is licensed to practice law in Canada and the United States and is a registered U.S. patent agent, and also practiced as a trademark and patent agent in Canada earlier in his career. His experience covers the pharmaceutical chemical and consumer goods (beauty care, oral care, home care, fabric care and fine fragrance) patent fields. He specializes in chemical compositions, surfactant chemistry, small molecules (NCEs), enzyme technologies, formulation and delivery systems, manufacturing processes and apparatuses, packaging, commercial innovations (demo tools) and industrial designs.

We are very pleased to welcome Tom to Smart & Biggar and wish him great success.
